Chandra Reveals Origin of Key Explosions
Posted by Prateek Tripathi on Tuesday, February 23, 2010,
This composite
image of M31 (also known as the Andromeda galaxy) shows X-ray data from
NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory in gold, optical data from the
Digitized Sky Survey in light blue and infrared data from the Spitzer
Space Telescope in red. The Chandra data covers only the central region
of M31 as shown in the inset box for the image.
New results show that the Chandra image would be about 40 times
brighter than observed if Type Ia supernova in the bulge of this galaxy
were triggered by m... Continue reading ...

Quake Aftershock Damage Seen by NASA Satellite
Posted by Prateek Tripathi on Wednesday, February 10, 2010,
The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer
(ASTER) instrument on NASA’s Terra spacecraft captured this false-color
image of Haiti on Jan. 21, 2010, nine days after a magnitude 7.0
earthquake struck the region and caused massive damage and loss of
life, and one day after a large 5.9 aftershock caused additional
damage. While ASTER's 50-foot resolution is not sufficient to see
damaged buildings, it can be used to identify other results. Tiny dots
of white against the p... Continue reading ...
Spirit's Tracks
Posted by Prateek Tripathi on Wednesday, February 10, 2010,
This view from the navigation camera near the top of the mast on
NASA's Mars Exploration Rover Spirit shows the tracks left by the rover
as it drove southward and backward, dragging its inoperable right-front
wheel, to the location where the rover broke through a crust in April
2009 and became embedded in soft sand. The rover team's strategy to
extricate Spirit from the sand trap was to follow these tracks out,
heading north. Spirit took this image during the 2,092nd Martian day,
or sol, of t... Continue reading ...

Mission to Jupiter
Posted by Prateek Tripathi on Friday, February 5, 2010,
With its suite of science instruments, Juno will investigate the
existence of a solid planetary core, map Jupiter's intense magnetic
field, measure the amount of water and ammonia in the deep atmosphere,
and observe the planet's auroras. Juno’s principal goal is to
understand the origin and evolution of Jupiter. Underneath its dense
cloud cover, Jupiter safeguards secrets to the fundamental processes
and conditions that governed our solar system during its formation. As
our primary example ... Continue reading ...

Rover Gives NASA an "Opportunity" to View Interior of Mars
PASADENA, Calif. -- NASA's Mars exploration rover Opportunity is allowing scientists to get a glimpse deep inside Mars.
Perched on a rippled Martian plain, a dark rock not much bigger than a
basketball was the target of interest for Opportunity during the past
two months. Dubbed "Marquette Island," the rock is providing a better
understanding of the mineral and chemical makeup of the Martian
interior. "Marquette Island is ... Continue reading ...

Galaxy Cluster Has Two 'Tails' to Tell
Posted by Prateek Tripathi on Friday, February 5, 2010,
Two spectacular tails of X-ray emission have been seen trailing behind
a galaxy using the Chandra X-ray Observatory. A composite image of the
galaxy cluster Abell 3627 shows X-rays from Chandra in blue, optical
emission in yellow and emission from hydrogen light -- known to
astronomers as 'H-alpha' -- in red. The optical and H-alpha data were
obtained with the Southern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) Telescope in
Chile. At the front of the tail is the galaxy ESO 137-001. The brighter
of the two... Continue reading ...
